Bilingual Programs Offered at Volta School

Volta School offers three different types of Bilingual Education Programs.

Spanish Dual Language: Dual language is a form of education in which students are taught literacy and content in two languages. The program begins in pre-school and will go up to sixth grade beginning next year. As the students begin the program Spanish is the primary language used to teach content and literacy is Spanish. As the student progress through the system English is incorporated more until it eventually evens out in third grade as English and Spanish are used equally to teach fluency and content.

Transitional Bilingual Programs: There are three transitional bilingual programs at Volta School: Gujarati Bilingual, Spanish Bilingual, and Arabic Bilingual. In these programs students are serviced in Gujarati, Spanish, or Arabic. In the transitional bilingual program model the native language is used to teach content areas such as math, science and social studies. The purpose of teaching the content area in the students' native language is to allow the students to continue to progress academically while acquiring English fluency. Research has proven that students who acquire skills in their native language can more easily transfer knowledge over to their second language (English). The ultimate goal of a transitional bilingual program is to transition the students into the mainstream classroom and prepare them to be at grade level with their peers.

Some parents may wonder why there are only three transitional bilingual programs when Volta School has many students who speak other languages. To answer your question, due to state regulation of funds, there must be over twenty students in the bilingual program who speak the language for a transitional bilingual program to be started. As the community changes so do the programs we offer. We look forward to opening new programs as new families join our school.

English as a Second Language: For students who do not receive services in their native language Volta School offers English as a Second Language programs. We are very fortunate to have a very educated and established staff. Over 90% of Volta Teachers have their ESL endorsements and can provide ESL services to their students without removing them from the classroom! For students in the upper grades who are new we offer additional support in our newcomer center taught by Mr. Choi.
